We are one of the oldest London chess clubs, having been in almost continuous existence since the 1880s, first moving to Tetherdown Hall in 1930. We remained there ever since, except for the Second World War. For a time in the 1980s we took another venue but soon moved back to Tetherdown. Some strong players have been members: perhaps the best has been Michael Hennigan, who joined us as a boy of 8 and became British Champion in 1993. He is not typical of our present players, however. Although we have quite a good range of strength, there is no need for anyone who walks in to feel overawed.
